Communicating Climate Risk - an Interactive Workshop
A series of workshop sessions led by experts from the UCL Climate Action Unit and the Analysis Under Uncertainty for Decision-Makers Network. Facilitated by Freya Roberts, Martine J Barons, Polina Levontin, Mark Workman, and Jo Walton.
Day three of the conference will be dedicated to communicating climate risk. This is an opportunity for academics to gain insights and practice skills which will increase the impact of their research where it matters: with decision-makers.
- 12:15-12:40PM - Introduction & opening remarks from Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society
- 12:40-01:25PM - Why risk communication is difficult
- 01:35-02:30PM - What decision makers want and need
- 02:50-03:50PM - Presenting risk information
- 04:00-05:00PM - Toolkits and goody bags
Experts from teams at University College London (UCL), Imperial College London, University of Warwick and University of Sussex will guide participants through a series of interactive workshops covering three topics. These include: why risk communication is difficult, what decision makers want and need when it comes to climate risk, and presenting climate risk information.
There will be a virtual goodybag to take home and there will also be a fourth session during the workshop where participants can contribute to the development of a communications toolkit.
Understanding uncertainty and risk in climate change is important for climate policymakers, decision-makers and broader societal stakeholders. Communicating climate uncertainty and risk is much more than a simple process done at the end of policy design. The sessions will articulate a holistic approach to decision making: one in which deep uncertainty can be better embraced. This approach, which uses mixed methods and active participation, is inclusive of multiple values and diversity, stakeholders and viewpoints.
The workshop will be designed to address challenges of and capture expertise from the perspectives of the participants.
